In the t-shirt quilt that I made for my daughter Kate I have some good examples of how to deal with multiples. Most people have something that they do every year. they want to remember each experience but there probably isn't room and usually the shirts are pretty similar. Sometimes just the color or the year is changed. In this photo on the left, is an example of the mission trips she went on. In one case, I cut out the the year from the front and added it to the location from the back of the shirt.
Here we see the many names Kate went by, all of which need to be in the quilt. The circles are made by cutting out 2 sizes of circles. Sew them to the background fabric, one at a time. Cut the background fabric in quarters and mix them all up, then sew them back together again. More detail:
- If you have a 6 1/2" background square, cut out a 4" and a 2" circle. Fold squares and circles in fourths to get placement lines. Sew the 4" circle on the square first. cut out the background fabric inside the circle. Next sew the 2" circle on. Now cut the square apart along the folded lines. When you make a bunch of these out of different colored circles and cut them apart and randomly sew them back together you get a great scrappy look. When they get washed the unfinished edges fray nicely.
